Our dentists often see patients who would like to swap existing mercury amalgam fillings for white fillings. We recommend white fillings for a number of reasons and are happy to replace old metal filings with natural looking composite fillings.
About white fillings
White fillings are made from dental composite combined with resins. Composite is available in different shades and we choose the closest match to your tooth shade for the most discreet aesthetic.
When you have a filling, the composite is moulded to fit the cavity; this is possible because composite can change state and it goes from being soft and putty-like to strong and durable with the help of a curing light.
White fillings are not just advantageous because they are impossible to detect when you smile; they are also made from safe and environmentally friendly materials.
What happens when you have a filling?
The filling procedure is simple, painless and quick. Before treatment begins, your tooth will be numbed and your dentist will start by cleaning the cavity. The decayed tissue will be removed and the cavity completely cleared. Bonding agent is applied to the tooth tissue and this helps to composite to stick. Your dentist will then place the composite inside the cavity and shape it to make sure that it fills the cavity. Once your dentist is happy with the shape of the filling, they will shine a light onto the composite to set it; this makes it hard. Once the composite is firm, your dentist will make any final adjustments and trim the filling for a perfect fit.
