Futuristic treatments used by dentists in London today

January 21st, 2012

Using lasers in the dental clinic may sound like some far-fetched futuristic prediction, but lasers are actually already widely used by dentists in the UK and researchers are always coming up with new uses for these clever gadgets in all areas of medicine. Some patients have expressed their concern about the safety of laser dentistry, but there really is nothing to worry about. The lasers used in dental treatments are very safe and are controlled at all times by the dentists themselves. It is just another tool that your dentist can use, in the same way that he would use a scaler to clean your teeth or a drill to fix your cavities.

The most common use of lasers in dentistry is during teeth whitening procedures. The teeth are coated with a special whitening substance, which reacts when it is exposed to a laser. This leads to quicker results than the usual teeth whitening treatments and it is also much more effective than previous products used in dental clinics. This is quite a superficial use of lasers compared to some of the new dentistry techniques that are being developed.

Gum lifts may be one of the newest cosmetic dentistry procedures available, but as more and more clinics invest in their own laser it is a procedure that is likely to gain popularity. If you feel that your smile is too gummy or you are suffering from a ‘gummy smile’, the laser can be used to “cut” away the unwanted areas of gum, leading to a more confident smile. Gum lifts are already common in Hollywood and as lasers become an accepted part of dentistry in the UK, they will become as normal as teeth whitening or braces.

Lasers can also be used in the preparation of teeth fillings, in place of the dreaded drill. Instead of needing a local anaesthetic in order to drill the affected tooth, a laser can be used to cut away the damaged parts, leaving the cavity ready for filling. A much quicker, cleaner and less painful way of getting a filling than the old-fashioned method!

PPM at Harley Street Dental Studio

November 17th, 2010

The PPM (Pure Power Mouth guard) is a new concept, which aims to improve sporting performance, as well as protecting the teeth from injury. The state of the art device uses the latest scientific research to enhance sporting performance whilst offering unrivalled protection.

Many people will wonder how a simple mouth guard can affect overall performance and some will be sceptical about the results; however, the team behind the PPM have spent a considerable amount of time developing the device and the product is based on years of research.

How does PPM work?

The PPM works by realigning the muscles in the face and jaw; this means that wearing the PPM ensures that the jaw joint is in the optimum position during the performance. The perfect alignment and positioning of the jaw helps to relax the facial muscles and prevents pain in the neck, shoulders, chest and back. The PPM also helps to release tension in the muscles and increases flexibility and strength.

Harley Dental Studio is delighted to offer the PPM to clients; this really is cutting edge technology and has been proven to improve overall sporting performance, as well as maximising comfort and protection. The PPM is ideal for anyone who plays sport but will be particularly beneficial for people who participate at elite level. There are different models available to suit your individual needs and each PPM will be custom-made to fit your mouth perfectly. The PPM Key is designed for amateur athletes, as it does not have the full range of features.

Unique sport enhancement technology

The PPM is different to other mouth guards because it is custom-made. The device is manufactured according to very precise measurements of the individual’s jaw. The measurements are generated using state of the art computer technology and are used to determine the individual’s optimum jaw position. The PPM helps to move and fix the jaw joint into the optimum position as soon as it is inserted, meaning that tension around the facial muscles and around the head is released. The PPM helps to combat TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint), which is a common condition affecting the muscles around the joint. TMJ disorder causes the muscles to be stressed and strained at all times, which affects their flexibility and movement.

The PPM is considerably more expensive than the average mouth guard, but it does have a vast range of benefits and will make a huge difference if you regularly participate in sporting activities. The device has already enjoyed great success in the USA and is now becoming increasingly popular in the UK. People who would benefit most from the PPM include hockey players, rugby players, boxers and lacrosse players; however, participants of non-contact sports may also benefit from the PPM.

Many people may assume that the PPM is a bit too good to be true and some may doubt the accuracy of the claims made by the team behind the PPM. However, research has shown that the PPM can make a real difference. If you want to know more about the PPM or are interested in the device, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team at Harley Street Dental Studio.

Implants for Greater Security

October 22nd, 2010

Finding out that you have to have dentures fitted brings all kinds of questions to mind; will they be noticeable? Can I still eat all my favourite foods? Will the dentures move around in my mouth? It’s understandable to be worried about all these things and more, especially if you are having dentures fitted to the lower jaw which usually results in more slippage and movement, making eating and speaking difficult and sometimes embarrassing. But with modern advances in dental technology there is a system that provides much more security and comfort for denture wearers.

Straumann Implant system

The Straumann Implant System is one such new method of fitting dentures. Rather than just being fitted into the mouth, or fixed in place with adhesive, using this system dentures are fixed onto titanium implants attached to the jawbone that replace the natural root of the missing tooth. It may sound a bit futuristic, but evidence has shown that the body readily accepts titanium and the metal is used frequently in repairing broken bones with no side effects. The system can be used to attach both dentures and crowns and is fitted in just one session with no further surgery required, unlike in some other implant systems.

Dental implant procedure

Fitting the implants is a simple procedure that will be carried out by a specialist prosthodontic expert. Only local anaesthetic is required while the titanium implants are being attached to the jawbone and the recovery period can be as little as six weeks. Once everything has healed up nicely, and the titanium “roots” have successfully fused with your own jawbone, then the dentures or crowns can be attached to the part of the titanium implant still visible. During the healing period, you will, of course, be provided with temporary dentures.

Often patients wanting this type of system in their mouth have to visit an oral surgeon to have the implants fitted before returning to their own dentist to get the crowns or dentures attached. These days many of the top, modern dental surgeries, like Harley Street Dental, can carry out all the steps of the treatment under one roof, making it much more convenient that travelling to different surgeries. Harley Street Dental has their own team of surgical professionals as well as an experienced prosthodontic specialist to fit the implants and dentures, all working in the same surgery in London. Not only is the treatment convenient, but it also has high approval from those who have had it done. Physiologically, these implants feel more like real teeth than removable dentures. After all, you won’t take out these dentures to clean them once they are attached, but will clean them with special toothpaste while they remain in your mouth.

Success rate

The success rate of the Straumann system has proven to be very high, and the implants still have a 95% success rate ten years after the fitting. Millions of these implants have already been fitted around the world, giving millions of people confidence in their smile even if they have to wear dentures or have crowns fitted. Unless you are unlucky, your implants should last your whole life and evidence has even shown that they can help preserve bone and gum tissue that is usually damaged by more conventional treatments. The dentures and crowns themselves will be made to blend as naturally as possible with your own teeth so no-one would be able to notice you are wearing dentures. Especially when you are still able to eat all the foods you enjoyed before having them fitted!
