Dentures are one of the oldest forms of tooth replacement available. Their origins can be traced all the way back to the 8th century. But things have progressed a bit since the days of dentures being made from wood or animal bone – the modern dentures available at Harley Street Dental Studio are made from materials that you might be more inclined to put in your mouth!

What are dentures?

Dentures are a form of replacement for missing teeth and can either be used to replace a few teeth (partial denture) or a full set (full denture). They are now made from an acrylic resin fixed to metal. Partial dentures are a great way to prevent the movement of your healthy teeth, whilst any kind of denture is great a way to combat problems regarding speech and eating, which missing teeth cause.

Getting dentures fitted

Getting a denture produced will take roughly a month and will usually require 5 appointments at your dental practice. An impression of your mouth will be made, which will be used as a template for your dentures. We will also ask you to use a trial denture, just to make sure you comfortable with the appearance and feel of dentures in general. If any tooth extraction is required, we will typically wait two months before starting the process of fitting dentures. This allows gums enough time to heal. Post-procedure, you might find using dentures a little strange. This is common, so don’t panic. It is recommended to consume only soft foods and liquids for a short while after your denture has been fitted.

Should I wear my dentures at night?

We recommend taking them out at night as it allows your gums to rest. Research also shows that leaving your dentures out for about 8 hours a day improves oral health. Patients with immediate dentures are recommended to wear them for the first night they have them.
