The wisdom teeth have a bad reputation, and this is because they can cause pain in some instances. These teeth, which are known as the wisdom teeth because they develop later in life, are the last teeth to develop and they are also called the third molars. Why are my wisdom teeth painful?

Some people have no problems with their wisdom teeth, but it is common to experience pain when the teeth are developing. In most cases, this is because there is a lack of space available for the teeth to grow properly. By the time your wisdom teeth come through, all the other teeth in the jaw are already there, so it can get crowded. If there is a lack of space available, you may find that your tooth starts to push against the neighbouring tooth and grow at an angle. This is known as an impacted tooth.

Stopping wisdom tooth pain

In some cases, taking painkillers can be sufficient to ease pain. However, in other cases, if pain persists or it gets worse, we may recommend removing the teeth. If the teeth are causing problems, it’s usually best to extract them, as you don’t actually need them and removing them will eliminate any further issues and protect your other teeth.

Wisdom tooth extraction is a fairly common procedure. Taking out the bottom teeth is more straightforward than the top teeth, but you shouldn’t feel any pain or worry about the procedure, as your mouth will be numbed and you’ll be treated by experienced, expert dentists.
