How we treat jaw joint issues

If you’ve got a sore jaw, this may be a sign of temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. TMD is a collection of symptoms that affects the joint; examples include:

• Clicking and popping noises
• Headaches
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Pain when you move the jaw
• Stiffness and a limited range of movement

One of the most common causes of TMJ disorder is bruxism. This is the medical name for tooth grinding. If you grind your teeth, this increases pressure on the facial muscles and it can cause tension in the muscles around the jaw and the neck. Bruxism can also damage the teeth.

If you grind your teeth, we can provide a simple, painless solution. By providing you with a customised bite guard, we can prevent contact between the teeth when you sleep, protecting the enamel and reducing the risk of symptoms associated with TMJ disorder. The bite guard is designed to fit you perfectly, and it provides a protective barrier. We can also offer orthodontic treatment in cases where tooth grinding is linked to the bite and repair any loose fillings or crowns, which may be contributing to bruxism.
