Articles Four Things You Should Do After Dental Surgery

How can we help?

After dental surgery, there are a few steps you can take to try and speed up the recovery process and eliminate any discomfort. If you’ve had dental surgery, here are four things you should do.

  1. Keep brushing as usual: it’s really important to keep your mouth as clean as possible after oral surgery. It may feel a little sore to brush at first, but try your best. Be very gentle around the affected tooth and gum area, and use a soft brush.
  2. Stick to soft food: for the first few hours after dental surgery, your mouth may be a little sore, and it’s best not to go straight back to your normal diet. If you stick to soft foods, like yoghurt and mashed potato, you should find that you can eat normally. Always wait a while if you’ve cooked hot food, as you run the risk of burning yourself if your mouth is still a bit numb.
  3. Be careful with hot drinks: when you have dental surgery, your dentist will use a sedative or anaesthetic to prevent you from feeling any pain. It can take a while for the effects to wear off completely. If you are having a hot drink, take care. If you don’t wait for it to cool, you may burn yourself, as your mouth will still be numb.
  4. Ask your dentist if you have any questions or problems: if you have any questions after dental surgery or you’re in pain, don’t hesitate to call us. We’re here any time to help. If you get sudden pain or you have pain that is getting worse, call us without delay.

If you’ve had dental surgery, we advise you to rest and take it easy for at least 24 hours and to follow the steps above. If you have any questions or you’re worried that you’re not recovering as expected, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
