What causes jaw pain?

Jaw pain can occur as a result of an accident or an injury, but it is often brought to our attention as a result of bruxism. Bruxism is the medical name for tooth grinding, a very common problem, which many people aren’t even aware of as it takes place during the night. Grinding the teeth together can damage the teeth, but it can also increase tension in the muscles surrounding the jaw, causing discomfort and stiffness. If you have symptoms, such as swelling, pain, clicking and popping noises and a restricted range of movement, you may be diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMD. This is a group of symptoms that affect the joint that joins the skull and the lower jaw. TMD is not usually a severe problem, but it can be distressing if it causes you pain on a regular basis.

Bruxism is commonly linked to stress and anxiety, but it can also occur when there are issues with the bite (the relationship between the upper and lower arches of teeth) or there are loose fillings or crowns.

How our specialists can help

If you suffer from jaw pain, our specialists can discuss symptoms with you and examine the jaw joint to ascertain a cause and find effective solutions. If bruxism is likely to be the cause, we can provide you with a specialist bite guard, which can be used to prevent direct contact between the upper and lower arches of teeth while you’re asleep. The bite guard is similar to a mouth guard worn for sport, it’s designed to fit comfortably, and it can prevent damage to your teeth as well as symptoms of TMD. We can also help to rectify problems linked to the bite and loose restorations.
