Types of Dental Aligners Available for Patients from London

February 12th, 2012

If you still conjure up images of Ugly Betty-style train-tracks when you hear the word braces, the chances are that you are not aware that the world of orthodontics has evolved at a rapid pace and a whole new range of treatments are now available, including a number of aligner systems, which are both discreet and effective.

Aligners are designed to combat many of the problems faced by patients with fixed braces. They are a flexible, aesthetically pleasing alternative to conventional braces and have become very popular, especially with adult patients. There are various options, including:

Invisalign

Invisalign has taken London and the world of orthodontics by storm and has provided an amazing solution for patients who want a straighter, more attractive smile, without being lumbered with bulky, unsightly braces for months on end. Invisalign clear plastic aligners to move the teeth into position gradually. The aligners are worn for two weeks at a time and then you transfer to the next one, until treatment is complete. The aligners are advantageous because they are virtually invisible to everyone and are removable, which promotes good oral hygiene and enables patients to eat and drink normally.

Clearstep

Clearstep is an invisible brace system, which uses clear aligners to create a beautiful, straight smile. The aligners, like Invisalign aligners, are removable and almost invisible to others, meaning you can get the smile you want without anyone even knowing that you are having orthodontic treatment. Clearstep is suitable for patients of all ages and can be used to treat crowding, crooked teeth, gaps between the teeth and problems relating to the bite.

Simpli5

Simpli5 is a highly effective treatment for minor orthodontic problems and involves wearing a series of 5 aligners, with treatment usually completed within 10-20 weeks. The aligners are light, comfortable and very discreet and as they are removable you can take them out to eat, drink, clean your teeth and look your best at special occasions.

Clear aligners are very effective, especially if you are worried about the way you will look during the treatment process. Some aligner treatments are aimed at minor problems, while others can achieve greater movement. Your dentist will be able to advise you which system is best, based on your individual prescription.

Are Patients from London ever too Old for Cosmetic Dentistry?

February 8th, 2012

Cosmetic dentistry has boomed in recent years, thanks to the increased availability of treatment, competitive prices and a growing pressure to look good, but cosmetic treatments are not just for upcoming A-list actors, singers and models and these treatments are accessible to everyone, regardless of your age.

If you have been pouring over pictures of people flashing beautiful, healthy-looking smiles, thinking that you would love to have the same smile, but feel that you are too old, this is not the case.

Orthodontic treatment

Most people still associate braces with teenagers and envisage bulky, train-tracks when they think about orthodontic treatment. However, a lot has changed and adult orthodontic treatments are becoming increasingly popular. Gone are the days when treatment meant being lumbered with an unsightly metal brace, now you have the option of a myriad of treatments, including removable appliances, discreet fixed braces and invisible aligners.

Orthodontic problems are very common in London and they do not heal themselves, so if you often regret not having treatment during your teenage years and constantly feel that your smile is letting you down, it’s never too late to have treatment, as long as your teeth are healthy and strong.

Tooth whitening

Tooth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments and it’s not hard to see why. The procedure takes less than an hour in most cases and the results are incredible and instantaneous. As you age, your teeth can become discoloured, especially if you smoke or are partial to a coffee in the morning and a glass of red wine in the evening. Whitening treatments are suitable for most people and they give your smile an instant healthy glow, which will make you feel great and look younger.

How do I find out more?

Having dental treatment can be a daunting prospect, especially if you suffer from dental anxiety or haven’t been to a dentist in a long time. If you want to find out more about how a cosmetic dentist could help you transform your smile, call the practice for a consultation. During the consultation, you can ask as many questions as you want and get an idea of the difference a session in the dental chair could make to your appearance and confidence.

How do Invisible Brace in London Work for the Masses?

February 3rd, 2012

It is common for adults to be unhappy with the alignment of their teeth, but many may feel embarrassed about getting braces. Bulky metal braces are associated with childhood orthodontics and some people would feel embarrassed to wear them. However, help is at hand from dentists in London with numerous invisible braces now available.

What are the advantages of invisible braces?

• Most importantly they are, well, invisible! In the case of Invisalign braces, they look like a clear retainer brace, but actively straighten your teeth.
• You can take them out. It is recommended that you wear your aligner around 20 hours per day, but if there is a special occasion, such as a meal or a job interview, you can remove them easily.
• There is no “idle” time where your braces are ineffective. Normal braces require tightening every so often, but unless it is timed properly there can be periods of time where your teeth are not being affected by the brace. Invisalign invisible braces are replaced every two weeks and are carefully crafted to continually adjust your teeth.
• They are gentler than conventional braces and, interestingly, more effective. In the case of the Inman Aligner, they are much more precise, because coiled springs push teeth from the back, while a clear wire over the front of the teeth provides an opposing force. This lessens the tooth’s natural resistance to being moved.
• The Inman Aligner often costs less than other kinds of braces at around £1,500.
• It takes much less time to push teeth into their desired position, usually between four and sixteen weeks, whereas a standard brace can take up to two years.

Any disadvantages?

There are a few minor disadvantages to invisible braces. As with all braces, there may be some discomfort at first as your teeth begin to move. Due to the retainer style of the brace you may develop a slight lisp and you may also notice increased levels of salivation at first, which isn’t the most attractive look! However, you will soon become accustomed to these initial problems. These braces are only suitable for fully-grown teeth and therefore should not be used by children.

Wedding Smile are a Thing of Beauty at London Dentists

February 2nd, 2012

When quizzed about the most important and memorable day of their lives, most people say their wedding day, so it’s no surprise that the number of people having dental treatment prior to their wedding day is increasing year on year. After months of planning and eager anticipation, it’s understandable to want to look and feel your best on your big day and your smile can have a huge impact on how you feel. If you’re not happy with your smile, this will affect your confidence when the main event comes around.

Most people treasure the photos of their wedding day and it would be awful to banish them to a forgotten shelf or feel upset when you browse through them years later, as a result of being unhappy with your smile. Thankfully, there are many dental treatments that can transform your smile and ensure you look and feel a million dollars on your special day.

Smile makeovers

A smile makeover in London is the ultimate cosmetic treatment and is guaranteed to give you a stunning smile, which you won’t be able to resist showing off on your big day. A smile makeover includes a series of treatments and you can choose the treatments you want, to match the look you wish to achieve. Treatments available include tooth whitening, orthodontic treatment, veneers, cosmetic bonding and dental implants.

Tooth whitening

Tooth whitening is a brilliant treatment for any bride or groom who wants to give their smile an instant boost. The treatment works quickly and brightens the teeth by up to 7 shades, giving your smile a natural, healthy glow. There are various treatments available, including Zoom! and Enlighten, which are popular with the A-listers and home whitening kits, which lighten the teeth over a period of time, usually two weeks.

Veneers

Veneers are responsible for many of the dazzling, flawless smiles you see on film stars and models. Veneers are very fine sheets of laminate porcelain, which are placed over the top of the natural teeth and can be used to hide problems, such as stained and crooked teeth.

You deserve to feel your best on your wedding day and a trip to the dentist could ensure that you have the smile of your dreams, to match your perfect wedding day.

Straighten up your smile with the help of London dentists

January 22nd, 2012

Japan, often home to some of the weirdest and wackiest crazes, has come up with the strangest one yet – young women who clip on false “crooked” teeth in an effort to look younger. Or, at least that’s why some of them have signed up for the “Yaeba” or “Double-tooth” procedure, in which non-permanent false teeth are stuck to the patient’s real smile. Others have elected to have vampire-style fangs made for them, in reference to the popular Twilight series!

In the UK, however, straight teeth are still very much in demand and vampire fangs are for Halloween only. Patients at Harley Street Dental Studio are much more likely to be asking what we can do to straighten up their crooked smile rather than asking us to mess up a perfect set of teeth! At least “Yaeba” is only temporary and no one yet seems to have undergone dental treatment to make their natural teeth permanently crooked. Any dentist who agreed to a treatment like that would be very irresponsible, as a straight smile isn’t just for cosmetic reasons, but can actually help improve your oral hygiene.

Most people with crooked smiles or gaps in their natural teeth undergo orthodontic treatment while they’re teenagers, but braces are becoming a more common sight in adult mouths. Perhaps the patient didn’t want to have ugly metal braces when they were younger and have now decided to treat themselves to some of the innovative new kinds of orthodontic treatment on the market. Maybe their past orthodontic work wasn’t very successful and they have decided to have another try. Often, women come to us for orthodontic consultations a few months before their wedding day, determined that they are going to look their absolute best on the most important day of their lives.

Braces and aligners have come a long way in recent years, with the most modern designs proving a big hit with patients of all ages. Most aligners these days are practically invisible, are much more comfortable than the old “train tracks” and can even be temporarily removed by the patient for cleaning and the odd important social occasion. And all to create a perfect, straight smile – much more attractive than a crooked grin or vampire fangs!

Effective and discreet braces from dentists in London can brighten up your Christmas

December 20th, 2011

Some of the treatments dental practices in London offer include self-ligating braces to eradicate the need for extra ties inside the mouth, which helps alleviate friction inside the mouth and increase comfort. There are also a whole range of less intrusive procedures such as ceramic, lingual and ‘Invisalign’ braces that all provide more subtle ways to correct dental problems.

If you are searching for a Christmas present that is a bit different so socks, slippers and games, why not buy your loved one the chance of a smile that boosts their confidence and self-esteem?

Many of the clinics in London are well attended and, as such, have a wealth of reviews and testimonials available online, useful when deciding on somewhere for your own treatment.

On dentist websites there is also information on procedures, contact details, location of premises and often fees are set out. Also, a quick web search can often provide details on the online image your dentist has built up. A dentist website should also include testimonials from past and present customers and pictures of before and afters.

One of the other techniques used by orthodontists in London is the Inman Aligner. The Inman Aligner is a tool which is used primarily for problems with the alignment of patients’ front teeth. They offer many advantages when pitted against fixed braces, such as faster results and the flexibility of removal.

Other treatments that are sure to brighten Christmas smiles include ‘Damon Braces’, which eliminate the need for elastics inside the mouth due to the employment of a sliding door in the brace brackets. Again, this technique offers many advantages over other more traditional orthodontics such as quicker treatment and less obtrusive fixtures inside the mouth.

Dentists in London know the importance of a healthy, attractive smile

December 6th, 2011

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you so having an attractive smile usually helps to create a positive impression. If you do not have an attractive smile this may alter the way people perceive you. With children issues such as protruding teeth, crooked teeth and irregular facial features can often be the source of why a child is being bullied by their peers. In fact, recent research carried out by orthodontic specialists in the UK found that children with irregular dental features are more likely to experience bullying.

A healthy attractive smile has been linked to good academic performance and high levels of confidence by numerous researchers. If a child is happy about the way their teeth look, they are more likely to show off their smile and feel better about their overall appearance. Good oral health and a healthy, radiant smile have also been linked to success in relationships and in the world of work later in life.

A healthy smile is also important for good general health. Many studies have now shown that poor oral health contributes to an increased risk of serious health conditions. Children who have poor oral hygiene habits and a poor diet are more likely to suffer from poor oral health in their adult years.

In order to give your child the best possible chance of having a healthy and bright smile, it is important to encourage good oral hygiene habits from an early age. Encourage your child to brush their teeth twice a day, limit the amount of sugary foodstuffs they consume and take them to see a dentist on a regular basis.

If they suffer from orthodontic problems, such as crooked, crowded or poorly positioned teeth, ask your dentist for advice. Orthodontic problems are very common and many children will undergo treatment during their adolescent years. Orthodontic treatments may not be suitable for younger children and they may be encouraged to wait until their mouth has grown.
