Adult braces at Harley Street Dental Studio

December 23rd, 2010

Most people associate orthodontic treatment with teenagers. However, in recent years, there has been a huge increase in the number of adults who have chosen to undergo orthodontic treatment.

Why has orthodontic treatment become so popular?

There are two main reasons why adult orthodontic treatment has become so popular. The first is the boom in celebrity culture and the growth in popularity of the beauty and cosmetics industry. Nowadays, we are more conscious of our looks than ever before and more people are undergoing treatments and procedures to improve the way they look. Cosmetic dentistry is becoming more popular each year and a huge range of treatments are now available.

The other main reason for the boom in orthodontic treatment is the introduction of several new treatments. Many people still think of orthodontic treatment as bulky, metal braces. However, this is no longer the case and a huge range of innovative, modern new treatments are now available. Many of the treatments involve very fine and discreet braces, removable devices and specially designed aligners, which are invisible to others.

What treatments are available?

Many people still choose traditional fixed braces but an increasingly large proportion of adults opting to go for orthodontic treatment are going for newer, faster and more discreet treatments. Recently, a large number of treatments have come onto the market and design teams have taken treatment time, comfort and aesthetics into account.

One of the most popular treatments on the market is Invisalign, which is an innovative system that involves the patient wearing a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners. The aligners are designed to encourage the teeth to move in the right direction; each one is work for two weeks and then replaced with the next one in the series. Invisalign is really popular because the aligners are invisible to other people because they are made from clear plastic. They are also removable, which enables people to eat what they want and brush their teeth properly.

Six Month Smile braces are also becoming very popular, as they produce amazing results in just six short months. This makes it an ideal treatment for people who want quick results and are maybe preparing for a big event, like a wedding for example. The braces work by targeting the front teeth, as they are visible when you smile.

The Inman Aligner is another innovative new treatment, which can produce very quick results for people with minor orthodontic problems that affect their front teeth. The removable device is comprised of a coil spring, and this is positioned on the back of the teeth, while a minute metal bar is placed along the front of the teeth. The two component parts of the aligner generate forces, which makes the teeth move in the right direction.

How to choose the right treatment

With all these new treatments on offer, choosing the right one for you may be a daunting task and you may find that you are swamped with information. The best thing to do is to arrange a consultation with your dentist. They will take a look at your teeth and discuss the treatments with you, and then they will advise you which treatment would be best based on your oral health and orthodontic problems, your desired look and your budget.

Find Yourself a Perfect Smile for Christmas at your Harley Street dentist

December 22nd, 2010

The days to Christmas are ticking away quickly and maybe some of your end of year resolutions haven’t gone exactly to plan. Why not treat yourself to a last minute Christmas smile? But with such little time left, what’s available? Realignment techniques will take a little longer than the weeks left for Christmas but teeth whitening can be effective as quickly as an hour after you’ve had them done!

Whitening

The cheapest form of whitening is home whitening kits which are acquired either through your dentist, who will take a moulding of your teeth and have a kit sent to you around a week later, or by purchasing kits from shops or the internet. The kit will have either a tray or strip that is fitted to your teeth for a certain number of hours for around 2 weeks. Some kits (those bought from suspect sites on the internet for the most part) have been known to give rather damaging results to the rest of the mouth due to the whitening formula being too concentrated so always try to stick to dentist recommended and issued kits.

The quickest method for tooth whitening is in-surgery laser whitening and will involve your dentist placing whitening gel on to your teeth and exposing them to either a laser or light. The gel then whitens your teeth. This method can show improvements almost instantly after the procedure as well as dramatic change in the colour of your teeth. It is, however, significantly more expensive than in-home whitening techniques but if you’re after noticeable changes before Christmas then times almost up!

Realignment

While it might be too late to do anything about realigning now before Crimbo you could always start planning for next year. In the past ugly, metal braces were the only real option for realigning your teeth. Now you can make the most of Invisalign invisible braces which is composed of aligners that are changed every two weeks to fix tooth alignment. Because they are temporary they can also be removed for social occasions and don’t require readjustment from the dentist. There are a variety of different types of Invisalign braces but generally a quick course will have around 20 different braces meaning it should last just under a year. This obviously depends on how much of a change you’re hoping to get and can be more or less than this amount. Invisalign braces are much faster acting than regular braces and are usually only slightly more expensive, so if you don’t plan on getting them yourself for next Christmas they could still prove to be a good last minute present for someone else!

Dental X-rays at your Harley Street dentist

December 20th, 2010

Dental X-rays are important because they allow dentists to identify developing conditions and signs of oral health problems; X-rays show images and detail that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

What are X-rays?

X-rays have been used in medicine and dentistry for many years and date back to 1895. Physicist Wilhelm Roentgen first experimented with X-rays and found that bone was highly visible when rays from a cathode tube passed through the skin.

As science and technology have evolved, people now have a much clearer understanding of how X-rays work; X-rays are actually a form of energy that passes through objects in the form of waves. When an object is dense, the waves are absorbed, but, if the object is less dense, the waves will continue to pass through. Hard tissues such as bone and teeth are dense, so they appear very clearly on film, while soft tissues, including gums and cheeks, appear much less clearly and often just look like black masses.

What are X-rays used for?

X-rays are commonly used in medicine to detect bone fractures, obstructions in the intestines and certain forms of cancer and lung diseases. In dentistry, X-rays are used to detect cavities, show areas of decay, check the state of a filling, check the root canals, check for bone loss and identify abnormalities in the mouth, such as cysts or swellings. X-rays are also commonly used when a patient is about to undergo treatment, such as orthodontic treatment, dental implants and dentures, as a means of allowing the dentist to create an effective treatment plan. In children, X-rays may be used to monitor the development of the teeth and jaw bone.

People with good oral health do not normally require dental X-rays and X-rays will usually only be recommended for people with symptoms of oral health problems and underlying health conditions, which contribute to oral health problems.

Are X-rays safe?

Most people have seen stories about the potential dangers associated with X-rays in the media and this may have left you wondering about whether it is safe for you to have a dental X-ray. All types of radiation can cause damage; however, only very tiny amounts of radiation are used in medical and dental X-rays and you should only be advised to have an X-ray if you actually need one. In the past, people used to have X-rays more frequently and some dentists included them as part of a routine examination. However, in recent years, experts have urged dentists to be judicious when it comes to carrying out X-rays and they are only ordered when they are required as part of the patient’s treatment plan.

Recently, a number of measures have been introduced to protect patients from damage caused by radiation. The X-ray dose has been reduced so the beam is only focused on the area that is being examined, film holders have been introduced and the quality of the film has been improved, meaning X-rays can be done quicker. There is also strict regulation to ensure all X-ray machines are checked on a regular basis.

Thumb Sucking and Dental Problems

December 17th, 2010

Thumb sucking is a behaviour which crosses species. Not only is it found in humans, but chimpanzees and other primates also partake in the habit. Thumb sucking in a baby is basically the breastfeeding sucking reflex; it usually disappears after about 4 months. Many parents often ignore the activity in older children accepting it as the child’s way of comforting himself or herself.

Children will continue to suck their thumbs during their early years because they are bored, tired, worried or stressed. Nipping this in the bud can help stop the behaviour; otherwise, if a child is still thumb sucking beyond the ‘growing out phase’, it could contribute to major problems in later life. Adults displaying the behaviour will almost certainly have connected psychological problems.

Dental Problems

Many parents in an effort to pacify their children and stop them sucking their thumb will give them a dummy. While on the surface this might seem reasonable, there are in fact similar dangers to thumb sucking. One particular problem is dental. It can hold back development.

Dental problems associated with thumb sucking are many and varied. For instance, children who are still sucking their appendage by age 3 are at risk of reshaping their jawbone. Bones do not fully harden till much later in life. As such, the jawbone is still soft and pliable at age 3.

Other associated problems include misalignment of growing teeth and narrow dental arches. Further, both upper and lower sets of teeth will be affected; upper teeth could tip upwards and flare out while the lower set is likely to move inward. Associated with this forced teeth movement is the affect on the palate.

Palate and teeth misalignment will invariably cause other related problems such as difficulties in chewing and swallowing. The latter should be watched as it also indicates misalignment of the tongue; a problem with this will cause speech impediments.

In adults it is now known that thumb sucking if left unchecked as a child can cause a range of other physical complications. For instance, it can cause the tonsils to collapse resulting in snoring. While the latter is often the butt of jokes, for the sufferer it is anything but.

Stopping the Behaviour

While the above may seem rather gloomy, stopping the behaviour before it gets out of hand is not that difficult providing you are patient. Rather than pressurising children to stop sucking their thumbs it is perhaps better to come from a different perspective, namely praise the child when he or she doesn’t suck. If the child is old enough to understand it is worth setting up a reward system; in short rewarding the child for not sucking their thumb.

Finally, it might also be worthwhile getting advice off the dentist before embarking on more drastic methods such as taping the thumb. Some advocate using pepper or nail polish as a kind of bitter pill. It can work but this should never be used on young children.

Dental implants at your Harley Street dentist

December 15th, 2010

Dental implants are becoming an increasingly common treatment, with many people choosing them as a long-term solution for missing teeth. People often lose teeth, either as a result of dental health problems or as a consequence of an accident of injury; having gaps in the teeth may affect the appearance of your smile and it can also cause problems when you are eating and speaking.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are fine titanium rods, which are inserted into pre-drilled sockets in the jaw bone; the rod is designed to replace the root portion of the missing tooth. The implant needs time to settle into the gum but once the healing period is over, a new crown, denture or dental bridge can be attached to it, creating a natural looking replacement for the original tooth.

Why are dental implants so popular?

For many years, people who lost teeth had to choose between dentures and dental bridges to fill their gaps; however, in recent years, dental implants have been developed and provided a long-term alternative. Dental implants are a popular choice with both patients and dentists because they last a very long time and do not interfere with the healthy tissue around the missing tooth; dental implants also enable the new teeth to function very effectively in the same way as original teeth.

Dental implants also help to reduce bone loss and promote good oral health, as it is easy to clean the new tooth; unlike dentures and dental bridges, there are no special cleaning instructions and the implant should be cleaned in exactly the same way as natural teeth.

Dental implants are also beneficial for people who have dentures, as the implants provide better anchorage, which improves the function of the teeth. Implanted dentures also help to put people’s minds at rest because they know that their dentures will not come loose; implanted dentures do not affect speech or eating and they tend to fit better.

What does the procedure involve?

If you decide to go for dental implants, your dentist will first check your general oral health and treat any underlying or developing conditions. The implant is placed in a socket on the jawbone, so it is first necessary to cut and lift the gum and drill a small hole in the bone; the titanium implant is then fixed into the hole and the gum flap is stitched and closed. The implant is then left to settle into the gum and the gum tissue is left to heal for a period of 6 weeks to 6 months; after 4 to 6 weeks, a temporary crown can be fitted to the implant and then the permanent crown will be attached once the healing period has come to an end. There is the instance where people do not have enough bone mass to take the implant; if this is the case, the dentist may use a bone graft procedure to take bone from another place in the body and added to the bone in the jaw.

Are implants suitable for everyone?

Dental implants are appropriate for a vast majority of individuals, although smokers, heavy drinkers and people with dental health problems will usually be advised to go for an alternative treatment.

Invisalign: what you can and what you can’t do with aligners

December 13th, 2010

Invisalign invisible braces are fast becoming the orthodontic treatment of choice, as people look for a discreet device to give them straight, beautiful teeth. The beauty of Invisalign aligners is the fact that other people cannot tell that you’re wearing braces and this is a great comfort to people who are worried about the way they will look when they start wearing braces.

Another massive advantage of the aligner system is the fact that the aligners are removable; this means you have more flexibility and can go about your daily life in exactly the same way as you did before you had the braces made.

What shouldn’t you do with the aligners?

Wearing your Invisalign aligners should not have any significant impact on your daily life but experts advise patients to take the aligners out to do certain activities, such as cleaning their teeth, flossing, smoking, chewing gum and eating.

Taking the aligners out while you brush your teeth allows you to clean all areas of your mouth thoroughly and this helps to ensure that plaque and bacteria are removed from the mouth. You can clean your teeth in exactly the same way as you did before you started your course of treatment and you can also floss properly.

If you smoke, dentists will advise you to take the aligners out when you want to have a cigarette, as the smoke can stain the aligners, making them look dirty and more visible to other people.

You will also be advised to avoid chewing gum while you wear your aligners because the gum tends to stick to the braces; this can increase the risk of dental health problems, as plaque will start to collect on the aligner.

You will also be advised to take your aligners out when you eat; this enables you to eat what you want and prevents damage to the aligners. Other braces limit the foods you can eat and dentists advise people with fixed braces to avoid very hard and sticky foods; with Invisalign you don’t have to change your diet at all.

What can you do with the aligners?

Wearing aligners should not have any impact on your daily life and you can carry on as normal; you will be able to speak normally after the initial adjustment period, so there is no need to worry about your speech changing. You should really only take the aligners out while you eat and clean your teeth but you can also take them out if you have an important event, such as a wedding or a big party and you are worried about how your smile will look with the braces on. It’s important to try and wear your braces for as long as possible everyday or the treatment will not be as effective as it could be.

Solve your gum disease problems at Harley Street dental

December 10th, 2010

Gum disease is a very common health condition, which affects most of us at some point in our lives. Most people experience gingivitis, a mild form of the condition, which can be easily treated; however, some people develop periodontal disease, which is an advanced form of gum disease, which can be very serious.

What causes gum disease?

There are lots of different possible causes of gum disease but the most common cause is poor oral hygiene. If you neglect your teeth and gums, plaque starts to build up and cling to the surfaces of the teeth; plaque forms when you eat foods that are high in starch and sugar and bacteria breaks it down and produces acids, which attack the teeth. Plaque is usually removed by brushing, flossing and rinsing but if it is left in the mouth, it can develop into tartar, which is a hard substance that is difficult to remove.

Smokers and people who have diabetes are also more likely to suffer from gum disease and pregnant women are prone to gingivitis.

Signs to look out for

It’s important to treat gum disease early so that it does not develop into an advanced condition, so keep an eye out for common symptoms, including bleeding gums and swollen and red gums; these are symptomatic of gingivitis. If you experience symptoms such as bad breath, receding gums, loose teeth abscesses and a foul taste in the mouth, this may indicate that you periodontal disease; if this is the case, you need to arrange to see your dentist as soon as possible, as the condition can be very serious.

Tips for preventing gum disease

The best way to try and reduce the risk of gum disease is to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, use mouthwash and dental floss on a regular basis and see your dentist for a check-up every six to twelve months. It’s also beneficial to keep an eye on your diet and see your hygienist for regular cleaning treatments. Using an electric toothbrush is usually better for your teeth, as more plaque can be removed from the mouth. If you smoke, it’s also a good idea to try and give up; this will benefit your general health, as well as your oral health.

Treating gum disease

Mild cases of gingivitis can usually be treated by adopting a good oral hygiene routine and having a cleaning treatment at the dentist’s; however, if the condition is more serious, a more intensive treatment may be required. In severe cases, the affected tooth may have to be removed and surgery may be needed; your dentist may also advise you to have root planning, which is a powerful cleaning treatment that removes the bacteria from the roots of the teeth.

Dental veneers at your Harley Street dentist

December 8th, 2010

Dental veneers are a fabulous way to transform your average or slightly imperfect set of teeth into a dazzling smile that will turn heads on Oxford Street. When your teeth are fine but that slight crookedness, crack, chip, stain or even a gap, is getting you down every time you look in the mirror then dental veneers are probably the answer to your troubles.

Veneers are wafer-thin shells that cover the front of your tooth and hide any imperfections going on underneath; think of them as false nails for your teeth but with a much greater life expectancy. The veneer is cemented on to the front of your tooth and is colour coordinated so that it blends in and looks natural alongside the rest of your teeth. The procedure is quick, straightforward and relatively painless and within two trips to your dentist your Hollywood smile can be complete.

A versatile treatment

The veneer is versatile too – this is the perfect solution for most of the aesthetic problems you can have with your teeth. Think of them as that large glass of wine or a huge bar of chocolate after a long day at the office. The veneer can solve everything! A badly stained tooth that is beyond the capabilities of whitening treatments can be transformed instantly by covering it with a veneer. A cracked, chipped or worn tooth is quickly disguised by a dental veneer. Although not the first option or indeed the ideal one, a veneer can improve the look of crooked teeth if the crookedness is minor and the long process of orthodontic braces just does not seem worth the trouble. The veneer can even correct unsightly or uneven gaps in your smile. There is simply nothing they can’t make better – they really are your tooth’s knight in shining armour.

Which veneer is for you?

There are also as many choices of veneer as there are problems a veneer can solve – the possibilities are endless. Porcelain veneers are by far the most popular; strong and durable with a very natural-looking appearance and a life expectancy of up to 10 years. Composite veneers are the cheaper option and are perfect for tiny cracks or chips as they preserve more of your natural tooth. They are however not so durable, more prone to staining and have a shelf-life of just 1-2 years. There are many other options also; lumineers, Da Vinci veneers, MAC veneers and even non-permanent veneers, the latter are removable and reusable as and when the wearer requires a little extra sparkle in their smile. You can have just one tooth covered with a veneer or you can have a whole set if you are going for that A-list sparkle. Your dentist will be able to discuss all of these options with you.

I suspect many of you will be reading this thinking it all sounds fab but I’d rather have a chip in my tooth than volunteer myself for a terror ride or two in the dentist chair. Great news! The procedure can be complete in as little as two visits and neither visit is particularly traumatic. After an initial consultation and examination your tooth will be prepared by shaving off a tiny layer of the front of the tooth surface under a local anesthetic to accommodate the veneer. The dentist then takes an impression and on your next visit your veneer will be ready and waiting for you. After a quick cleaning and perfecting the fit, the veneer will be cemented into place and the ordeal is over.

So it really is that simple to achieve a showstopping smile to rival the Hollywood greats. Veneers instantly transform a mundane mouth into a naturally dazzling healthy looking smile. It’s a smile that can last too; with a good oral health routine, regular check-ups at the dentist and general good care and attention, your A-list smile will be the envy of your friends for years to come.

Follow the Invisalign instructions

December 6th, 2010

Everyone knows it’s important to follow your dentist’s instructions right? Well, apparently not if an interview with young model Karlie Kloss is anything to go by! She recently told a US magazine about how much she loves her new Invisalign braces but that she only wears them at night as they make it difficult for her to speak.

No doubt her orthodontist gave her pretty clear instructions about the best way to use Invisalign and those instructions probably didn’t include the words “Don’t worry Karlie, you can just pop them in and out whenever you please”. Of course, the only person that she’s hurting by failing to follow the Invisalign instructions is herself, as the process of fixing her teeth will now take that much longer or not ever be done at all.

The benefit of removability can be the downfall of some

The great benefit of Invisalign, aside from the aesthetic qualities, is that they can be removed whenever you need to –with the emphasis on the word need, not the word want. The Invisalign Teen brand is particularly popular among young people who are, like Karlie, moist likely to pick and choose the times when they wear their braces.  Parents and dentists alike must watch them like a hawk to make sure they’re wearing them when they go to school in the morning and when they come home. Unfortunately, you can’t watch them in the hours between!

The problem emerges because patients are told they can remove the Invisalign braces when they need to – for teeth cleaning, when playing sports or while eating. Because they get carte blanche to remove them on these “special” occasions, in the patient’s mind, these occasions will soon start to grow in number and length. Soon they’ll decide they won’t wear them for the whole lunch break at school. Then they’ll decide they won’t wear them when they go that big party at the weekend. Pretty soon, most waking hours will be ruled at as suitable for braces wearing and they’ll end up only wearing them at night.

Don’t put your money to waste

Hopefully adults using the Invisalign system will be more sensible. Usually they’re paying for the treatment themselves, so understandably want to make sure the process works as efficiently and quickly as possible. Having braces fitted in adulthood is more often your own decision, so you are already committed to the process. In teenagers, this is less obviously the case.

So how do you convince your teenager not to keep removing their handily removable Invisalign braces? You’ll just have to sit them down and find out why they feel they want to remove the braces so often. Invisalign are usually more comfortable than other braces, but maybe they are feeling some pain. Perhaps they are embarrassed about the way it has affected their speech. Some of these problems can be easily fixed with a visit to the dentist and an adjustment to the Invisalign braces.

If the problem is one of attitude, it may be more difficult to fix. If neither your or the orthodontist can convince them of the importance of wearing their braces, then it may be time to call a temporary halt to the treatment. It’s preferable to have work like this carried out while the patients are young, but not essential. Leave it a few years until your sulky teen is more of an adult and they are more likely to work with you and their dentist to make sure the procedure works.

More than just a clean and polish

December 3rd, 2010

While most of us would only think of making an appointment with a dentist for a regular check-up, toothache or at the most a tooth whitening session, there is actually a lot more on offer at the top practices. Once you’ve done all the hard work of getting your smile to look good – with braces, veneers or implants – why not pay a little attention to the rest of your face?

Cosmetics at your London dentist

A lot of dental surgeries, including the Harley Street Dental Studio, are starting to offer simple, non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures, alongside the regular clean and polish. The word “surgery” is a bit misleading here, as the procedures involve no cutting at all. In fact, most of the beauty treatments you can have at the dentist are nothing more sophisticated than a series of injections. But it’s what they inject into your face that counts!

The substance that everyone will have heard of is Botox. In fact, Botox has become so commonplace in society, that celebs are no longer ashamed to admit that they’ve had it done. Even relatively young stars are opting for a few shots of Botox to keep them looking amazing. Actress Megan Fox may only be in her early twenties, but she is a big fan of Botox.

If you are scared…

You can make appointments to have Botox injections at the Harley Street Dental Studio and you won’t even need an anaesthetic. For those of you who are a little worried about the needle, don’t be; it’s only a very thin needle that you will hardly feel as it pierces the top layer of skin. After all, that’s the layer that you are aiming to have smoothed out, so it doesn’t need to go any deeper.

You may have heard that Botox is related to the poison botulism. This is true, but there’s nothing to worry about. The doses that you get in any one session are so tiny that they cannot cause you any harm. Even if you had a few jabs over a series of weeks you wouldn’t get sick. You might get a slightly weird and still looking face, but you wouldn’t get sick!

What else is available?

The other injection that dental surgeries like the Harley Street Dental Studio offer is Restylane. This works in a slightly different way to Botox. Rather than smoothing out wrinkles and lines, Restylane fills up your wrinkles with a collagen-like substance. The best way to describe it is to imagine Polyfilla filling up the cracks on a wall, but that doesn’t sound too glamorous. These injections too are really simple, safe and painless. Best of all, you can often see the results immediately, so be prepared for some comments in the office if you pop out to the surgery for a lunchtime appointment!

Cosmetic surgery isn’t for everyone, but neither is there a big stigma surrounding it any more. If you decide you want a new younger face to go with your new younger smile, then you can have everything done under one roof. And be assured that your practitioner is well trained and experienced, rather than risking some high street beauty salon.
