Stress is taking its toll on oral health

November 29th, 2010

In light of the recent economic turbulence, it’s no surprise that research suggests that people are experiencing greater levels of stress. Financial sector workers, business people and now public sector workers have been particularly badly affected by the recession; many have already lost their jobs, while others are facing an uncertain future and this has started to impact upon people’s health.

Recently, a number of dentists have claimed they have seen a huge increase in the number of patients coming to them with symptoms associated with teeth grinding, also known as bruxism. Teeth grinding is a major cause of headaches, jaw pain and tooth ache and also contributes to disrupted sleep patterns for both the individual and their partner.

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is a condition which is caused by excessive grinding or clenching of the teeth; some people may only grind their teeth very occasionally and they may not experience any symptoms but others may grind their teeth on a regular basis and this can contribute to symptoms including headaches, sensitive teeth, ear ache, jaw pain and damage to the teeth.

Causes of bruxism

One of the most common causes of teeth grinding is stress but there is also evidence to suggest that people with a certain type of personality are more likely to grind their teeth; people who are very ambitious, competitive or aggressive are likely to grind their teeth and these traits are often associated with professional high-fliers. Elite sportspeople are also more likely to grind their teeth.

Combating stress

Stress affects most of us at some point and most of the time we manage to deal with it fairly well; however, for many people, stress is an everyday experience and prolonged periods of stress can start to affect their psychological and physiological health. A significant proportion of people are currently living with stress, as a result of hard economic times, elevated levels of unemployment and additional factors, such as problems in relationships and health problems.

Stress can be managed and treated in a variety of different ways; some people find exercising, taking time out alone, doing a hobby, seeing friends, having a warm bath or having a massage helps them to deal with stress but more severe cases will often require more complex, long-term treatment. Stress is often linked to anxiety and depression and therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling can often help to ease stress and anxiety.

Treating bruxism

Aside from treatments and therapies for stress and anxiety, bruxism can also be prevented by wearing a custom-made mouth guard during the night; the vast majority of people only grind their teeth during the night and not aware that they do it. In some cases, bruxism may be caused by dental problems relating to the bite, which is the relationship between the upper and lower teeth; if this is the case, a dentist will be able to diagnosis the cause of the problem and try to fix that problem to prevent teeth grinding in the future.

Rates of decay still worrying for UK children

November 26th, 2010

Despite huge investment in NHS dental health services, recent figures have suggested that a third of UK 12 year olds suffer from tooth decay. The research, which was carried out by a team at Liverpool John Moores University, found that 1 in 3 12 year old children in the UK have decay.

Tooth decay is now one of the most common childhood illnesses, but it can be prevented by spending a few minutes each day cleaning the teeth. Emergency and paediatric units across the UK have reported an increase in the number of emergency dental cases in recent years and some dentists are seeing children as young as 2 years old with extensive decay.

What causes tooth decay?

Tooth decay is caused by the action of certain forms of bacteria, which react with sugar and subsequently attack the teeth. The bacteria produce plaque acids attack the protective enamel surfaces of the teeth; once the enamel is worn or damaged, the dentine portion of the tooth becomes exposed and the tooth becomes vulnerable to decay and acid erosion. When bacteria are allowed to collect in the mouth, more harmful acids are produced and the teeth are increasingly susceptible to decay.

A lack of oral hygiene and a poor diet are the major causes of tooth decay; if you don’t brush your teeth on a regular basis and use dental floss and mouthwash to remove additional traces of bacteria, plaque will start to form and the amount of bacteria in the mouth will increase, making the teeth vulnerable to decay.

Diet is important because certain foods, which have high sugar content, cause the bacteria to produce harmful plaque acids; the acids weaken the enamel surfaces of the teeth for up to an hour and during this period of time, the teeth are weak and susceptible to damage. As the enamel wears, the teeth become increasingly weak and cavities are likely to form.

NHS initiatives

Despite the seemingly worrying statistics, the proportion of children suffering from tooth decay has actually fallen by 4 percent in the last 8 years. In recent years, the government has ploughed money into NHS dental services and the health department has targeted children and tried to encourage families to live healthier, more active lifestyles. In reaction to the recent statistics, health officials claim they will continue to invest in children’s oral health and improve national standards.

Combating decay

In order to reduce the rates of tooth decay amongst children, experts are urging parents to get their kids involved in oral health from a young age; this involves encouraging a good daily oral hygiene routine, taking children for regular dental check-ups from an early age and providing them with a healthy, balanced diet. A good oral hygiene routine should include brushing the teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time and using mouthwash and dental floss on a regular basis to try and remove bacteria and food particles, which may have been missed during brushing.

How far would you go for the perfect smile?

November 24th, 2010

Cosmetic dentistry has hit the headlines recently because an increasing number of people are choosing to take the appearance of their teeth into their own hands. Dental experts used the media to convey an important message this week and warn members of the public against DIY whitening treatments, which could potentially be very harmful.

Experts spoke out against homemade treatments, including salt, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Research has shown that an increasing number of people, especially young people, are turning to homemade treatments because they are cheap and readily available; however, these treatments can have dangerous, long-term effects because the chemicals can strip the enamel off the teeth. Once the enamel has been damaged, the tooth is susceptible to both erosion and decay.

Why are whitening treatments so popular?

Whitening treatments have become extremely popular in the last few years, thanks to a huge number of celebrity endorsements and a growing number of television makeover shows. Now, everyone wants a perfect, healthy looking smile and whitening is a quick, relatively cheap way to achieve this look.

Over the course of time, the teeth can become discoloured, especially if you smoke or drink strong coloured drinks, like red wine and coffee, on a regular basis. Stained, yellowy teeth can make you look older and take away a healthy, youthful glow and a whitening treatment can restore the healthy white colour of the teeth and boost the overall appearance of the smile.

From a patient’s perspective, whitening treatments are much less invasive than some other cosmetic dental treatments and it can produce results very quickly and simply; for patients who are anxious about going to a dentist but want to improve the overall look of their smile, whitening is an ideal option.

Professional whitening

Professional whitening treatments have been clinically proven to achieve excellent, long lasting results. At Harley Street Dental Studio the team recognises that people are intrigued by whitening treatments and there is consequently a large range of treatments on offer to suit patients with different needs and budgets.

The most popular whitening treatments include Zoom! whitening and Enlighten, which have both been featured in popular television shows and promoted by numerous celebrities. Both treatments can improve the look of the teeth considerably and lighten the teeth by up to ten shades. Both treatments are completely safe and have an excellent reputation amongst both patients and professionals.

As whitening treatments become more popular, prices are also becoming increasingly competitive and professional treatments are now more affordable than ever before. The message from dental experts was loud and clear this week in the media: avoid DIY remedies and potions and go for the slightly more expensive but more effective, safer treatment.

Porcelain restorations at your cosmetic dentist

November 22nd, 2010

Most people associate porcelain with ornate decorations and delicate ornaments; however, porcelain is becoming increasingly common in the dental industry and many people are choosing to have porcelain restorations to restore the natural look of their smile. Many people still think of black metal fillings when they are asked about dental restorations, but this is no longer the reality. Now, most people are opting for more natural looking restorations and porcelain is big business.

Why porcelain?

Porcelain is a popular dental material because it is a very similar colour to the natural colour of the teeth; this means the restoration will blend in with the existing aesthetic of the smile and create a natural, healthy looking smile. Porcelain is also beneficial for patients because it is strong, durable and long-lasting.

According to research, polls and surveys, people are becoming increasingly conscious about their appearance and many consider their smile to be their most important feature. Research has shown that people who are happy with their teeth are more likely to smile and have high levels of self-confidence, which enables them to create a positive first impression; it is therefore no surprise that people who are pleased with their smile are more likely to succeed in both their professional and social lives.

Porcelain restorations can help to preserve the healthy glow of the teeth and create an attractive, healthy looking smile.

Available treatments

The most common types of restoration include fillings and crowns; many people are choosing natural tooth coloured restorations now, as they are more concerned about the physical appearance of their smile. Porcelain crowns are an ideal solution for people who are desperate to preserve the natural healthy look of their smile; the crowns are matched to the existing colour of the teeth and will be completely indistinguishable from the original teeth.

As well as complete porcelain restorations, there are also restorations made of a combination of metal and porcelain; porcelain helps to maintain the natural look of the teeth, while the metal helps to provide additional strength and durability.

Porcelain has also become an extremely popular material for cosmetic dental treatments, including Da Vinci veneers, porcelain veneers and MACVENEERS. Veneers have really taken off in recent years, in tandem with the growth in popularity of television makeover shows, including The Swan, 10 Years Younger and Extreme Makeover. Veneers are very thin laminate shells made from porcelain, which are placed over the existing teeth in the same way as false nails are placed over nails.

Veneers can create incredible transformations; they can completely change the appearance of chipped, damaged and stained teeth and can also cover up gaps between the teeth, giving the illusion of a perfectly formed set of pearly whites. Harley Street Dental Studio offers clients the latest veneers on the market.

Smile Makeover: the ultimate cosmetic dental treatment

November 19th, 2010

The importance of looking good

Your smile is often the first thing people notice about you and first impressions are usually long-lasting and influential so having a smile to be proud of is important. Today, perhaps more than ever, attention is focused on beauty and appearance, with the enormous growth of the beauty industry and the boom in celebrity and popular culture. Most of us don’t have a perfect smile but now we live in a world where we can have almost everything we want and a smile makeover can give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

In the UK, like in many other countries across the world, we are spending an increasing amount of time and money on our appearance and the majority of people would admit to being concerned about the way they look. For many, their smile is one of their most important features and having an imperfect smile is consequently not an option. Cosmetic dental treatments can be pricey but fees are becoming increasingly competitive and an increasingly large proportion of people are willing to sacrifice their hard-earned cash in the name of looking and feeling great.

What is a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is the ultimate cosmetic dental treatment; you can choose from a whole host of different cosmetic treatments to give you the look you’ve always wanted. Choose from popular treatments including teeth whitening, veneers, orthodontic treatments, cosmetic bonding and gum contouring.

Choosing the perfect treatments

When faced with such an extensive menu of treatments, it’s not surprising that many people feel a little daunted and confused; however, this is when your dentist will come in handy, as they will be able to explain what the different treatments entail, assess your individual requirements and discuss what kind of look you want to achieve. You may prefer to go for a more natural look or you may want to go all-out and treat yourself to a glamorous Hollywood-style smile.

Most people opt for a combination of popular treatments; if you have orthodontic problems, you may wish to go for cosmetic braces and then treatments to further enhance the aesthetic of your smile, such as a whitening treatment. If you have chipped, broken or heavily stained teeth, you may wish to go for a set of veneers, which will completely transform your old smile into a glossy, gorgeous looking new one.

The results: is it worth the effort?

A smile makeover really can produce incredible, unbelievable results; even the most unattractive smile can be completely transformed and in a matter of weeks an unhealthy set of chipped, damaged, wonky and stained teeth can become a perfect set of glossy, stunning pearly whites. For many people, a great smile will always be worth the money, no matter what the final bill; however, for others, the mere thought of shelling out thousands of pounds will fill them with sheer dread; at the end of the day it’s a personal choice.

PPM at Harley Street Dental Studio

November 17th, 2010

The PPM (Pure Power Mouth guard) is a new concept, which aims to improve sporting performance, as well as protecting the teeth from injury. The state of the art device uses the latest scientific research to enhance sporting performance whilst offering unrivalled protection.

Many people will wonder how a simple mouth guard can affect overall performance and some will be sceptical about the results; however, the team behind the PPM have spent a considerable amount of time developing the device and the product is based on years of research.

How does PPM work?

The PPM works by realigning the muscles in the face and jaw; this means that wearing the PPM ensures that the jaw joint is in the optimum position during the performance. The perfect alignment and positioning of the jaw helps to relax the facial muscles and prevents pain in the neck, shoulders, chest and back. The PPM also helps to release tension in the muscles and increases flexibility and strength.

Harley Dental Studio is delighted to offer the PPM to clients; this really is cutting edge technology and has been proven to improve overall sporting performance, as well as maximising comfort and protection. The PPM is ideal for anyone who plays sport but will be particularly beneficial for people who participate at elite level. There are different models available to suit your individual needs and each PPM will be custom-made to fit your mouth perfectly. The PPM Key is designed for amateur athletes, as it does not have the full range of features.

Unique sport enhancement technology

The PPM is different to other mouth guards because it is custom-made. The device is manufactured according to very precise measurements of the individual’s jaw. The measurements are generated using state of the art computer technology and are used to determine the individual’s optimum jaw position. The PPM helps to move and fix the jaw joint into the optimum position as soon as it is inserted, meaning that tension around the facial muscles and around the head is released. The PPM helps to combat TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint), which is a common condition affecting the muscles around the joint. TMJ disorder causes the muscles to be stressed and strained at all times, which affects their flexibility and movement.

The PPM is considerably more expensive than the average mouth guard, but it does have a vast range of benefits and will make a huge difference if you regularly participate in sporting activities. The device has already enjoyed great success in the USA and is now becoming increasingly popular in the UK. People who would benefit most from the PPM include hockey players, rugby players, boxers and lacrosse players; however, participants of non-contact sports may also benefit from the PPM.

Many people may assume that the PPM is a bit too good to be true and some may doubt the accuracy of the claims made by the team behind the PPM. However, research has shown that the PPM can make a real difference. If you want to know more about the PPM or are interested in the device, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team at Harley Street Dental Studio.

Make it a White Christmas

November 15th, 2010

Many of us want Christmas presents for our friends and loved ones to be special, meaningful and unique … but we unsurprisingly end up finding inspiration low on the ground during the madness that is Christmas shopping and choose to buy a lovely Toblerone for them instead. With Christmas just around the corner now is a good time to start thinking of the perfect gift: So why not give a gift to remember with professional teeth whitening?

The most common form of whitening, and arguably the most effective, is laser whitening, or in-surgery whitening. As the name suggests a trip to the dentist’s surgery is needed, the procedure however is quite painless and takes from one to two hours.

A simple yet effective present

The procedure itself is quite simple: firstly your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned of any marks and every last scrap of plaque, known as a scale and polish. Your tooth colour will then be noted down, either through photography or a colour scale. Highly concentrated peroxide is then used to bleach your teeth after this, so your gums and lips need to be protected; a gel will be put on these areas that then hardens as it dries, leaving only your teeth exposed to the chemical. Once the protection gel has set the peroxide will be exposed to light for 15 minutes, and this is done three times for the same period of time. Once the procedure is finished your teeth may feel sensitive for up to 2 days.

Many dentists recommend using a professional home whitening kit following in-surgery whitening. For this a dental impression will be needed and it will take one or two weeks for the tooth model to be made and shipped back to your dentist. Once you have your kit the quantity of the peroxide gel you should use, and the amount of time to keep it in the mouth, will vary on how much of a change you want to see; however most home kits will take a number of weeks to achieve the desirable change.

Where can you buy your white Christmas?

Professional home whitening kits can be purchased either from your dentist’s practice or from pharmacist or on the internet. It is highly recommended however to use one that is suggested by your dentist as others have been found to  have too highly concentrated peroxide levels that can damage unprotected gums and lips. Recommended home dental kits do not generally come with gum protection but use a less concentrated peroxide formula. For your teeth whitening needs though it is recommended the procedure be done according to the instructions of your dentist.

The reason it is recommended to use both in-surgery whitening and home whitening is because both have their pros and cons. While in-surgery is quicker, with changes usually being noted almost immediately after the appointment, home whitening kits seem to generally be more effective.

Mouth Cancer Action Month

November 12th, 2010

This month, the British Dental Health Foundation has launched a national campaign to raise awareness of oral cancer. Mouth Cancer Action Month is being celebrated across the UK, with many dental practices offering screening sessions and running events to help raise awareness of the potentially deadly disease in local communities.

Oral cancer: the facts

Most people are shocked when they hear the figures relating to oral cancer; each year more than 5,000 cases are diagnosed and one person dies from the disease every five hours in the UK. Oral cancer causes more deaths than cervical cancer and testicular cancer, yet very few people are aware of the signs and symptoms, and consequently most cases are not diagnosed until the cancer has reached an advanced stage.

In the last decade alone, the number of cases of oral cancer in the UK has increased by 40 percent and an increasing number of young people are developing the disease, according to the British Dental Health Foundation.

What causes oral cancer?

The major risk factors for oral cancer include smoking, drinking alcohol on a regular basis and eating a poor diet. People who smoke and drink heavily are much more likely to develop the disease than people who do not smoke or drink on a regular basis; 75 percent of cases of oral cancer in Europe involve patients who smoke and drink.

Recently, diet has been linked to increased incidence of oral cancer; people whose diet is lacking in fruit and vegetables tend to be more likely to develop the condition.

Raising the profile

Unlike others forms of cancer, including breast cancer, cervical cancer and testicular cancer, oral cancer does not have a high media profile and consequently many people are unaware of the symptoms and signs they should be looking out for. The Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign is aiming to raise the media profile, inform members of the public about the disease and encourage people to attend screening clinics and regular dental check-ups. The recent news that Hollywood actor, Michael Douglas has been diagnosed with throat cancer may help to make people more aware of the disease.

Fighting oral cancer

In order to reduce the risk of developing oral cancer, experts recommend making lifestyle changes and visiting the dentist for regular routine check-ups. The statistics show that smoking and drinking can increase the chance of getting oral cancer considerably, as well as contributing to an array of other serious health conditions, so giving up smoking and cutting down on drinking will help to boost general health and reduce the risk of oral cancer. Likewise, swapping ready-meals, fast-food and sweet treats for healthier alternatives will also help to reduce the risk of developing oral cancer and a healthy diet has also been proven to make a huge difference to overall health. A healthy, balanced diet should include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, lean meat and poultry and wholegrain foods, including cereals, bread, pasta and rice.

Routine dental check-ups could save your life as your dentist will be able to identify early signs of oral cancer; this means you can be treated early. Early diagnosis can improve survival chances by up to 90 percent. Symptoms to look out for include sores which do not heal quickly, red or white patches in the mouth or throat and unusual swellings in the throat or mouth. Dentists recommend attending a check-up every six to twelve months.

Halloween: A scary time for teeth

November 10th, 2010

So October is over, summer is long gone and perhaps some of us are worried about the damage Halloween has had on our kids’ (and perhaps our own!) teeth. Naturally, dental problems – what with sweets at Halloween and an array of sweet and sugary foods on Bonfire Night – have been seen to notably rise during autumn. With cavities and tooth erosion abound many people look for the different types of dental care available to them at this time of year.

Are the cold winter months bad for our teeth?

The reason autumn is such a danger to teeth is not because of the amount of sugar that is eaten but the amount of time spent eating sugary foods. Throughout autumn sugary foods are consumed more consistently than any other time of year. The main problems that occur from excessive sugar consumption are tooth erosion and decay. Every time you eat, acid is produced by plaque – a bacteria in the mouth – as a result of the sugar in your meal, it sticks around for around half an hour once you’ve finished eating, eroding the enamel of your teeth and takes saliva an hour to neutralise; this is known as tooth decay. Tooth erosion is caused by acids directly from sugary foods and effects the whole tooth; the time that the acid is attacking the tooth is generally the same with both however. Because of this it is better to eat sugary foods over a short period of time than spread out the consumption.

Many dentists are now advising people to give out small toys or healthy snacks at Halloween rather than sweets and snacks which are more commonly associated with Halloween. Many people might see this as not traditional to Halloween or simply decide they still want sweeter snacks!

The options available to you

If this is the case dental treatment may become something that will be needed. There are a number of cosmetic bonding options (a dental technique where a tooth-coloured material is fixed over a tooth, either for cosmetic reasons or to protect the tooth). One of these options is to get a dental crown, which takes its name from the way the material will be attached to the top of your tooth, similar to a crown. This procedure will involve multiple trips to the dental practice. Firstly the area that is getting the crown will be numbed using aesthetic. Secondly your dentist will file away the decay and a small portion of the tooth enamel of the damaged tooth so the crown can sit evenly with your other teeth.

Sometimes if your tooth has been badly eroded your dentist may have to add to the tooth enamel so that it is the same size as your other teeth. Next a mould will be made of your tooth and sent away so your crown can be made. This generally takes 2 to 3 weeks and you will be given a temporary crown in the mean time. When you return once the crown has been made, the tooth will once again be numbed and the temporary crown removed. Your dentist will then cement the new crown in place.

Another method is to get a filling, this procedure is much simpler and takes only one visit, it is something most people will at least have considered at some point. The decay of the tooth is firstly removed with the use of the infamous drill we all dread. A specialised filling specific to your tooth is then fitted. This filling can be a number of colours. White ones are seen to be the more aesthetically pleasing but generally don’t last as long as the more traditional silver fillings.

Proud to supply Invisalign ‘invisible’ braces

November 8th, 2010

There’s been many impressive portmanteaus that are successful to this day, take for example, brunch (breakfast and lunch), smog (smoke and fog), motel (motor and hotel) and now – Invisalign.  A series of clear, removable teeth aligners, they’re a fantastic alternative to metal braces and excellent value for money.

Designed and manufactured by Santa Clara-based Align Technology, there are over 48,000 doctors worldwide who have provided more than 32 million aligners (and brilliant straight smiles!) – and Harley Street Dental group are proud to bring this service to their patients.

Sounds too good to be true?

The advantage of this product is that there really are no disadvantages to it.  Whilst people seeking to acquire straight teeth do so for cosmetic purposes, there’s another reason why having straight teeth is beneficial – they are simpler to keep clean than crooked teeth, as they can be a primary element of decay and other dental complications.

Due to the fixed nature of metal braces, it’s difficult to keep teeth clean as they cannot be removed for eating – with tooth decay occurring in up to 50% of patients who wear fixed braces.  Invisalign allows patients to remove their aligners when they need to eat and clean, and as they are removable you are free to eat whatever you want.

Say cheese!

Using a series of aligners, treatment can last from 6 months to a year.  The process starts with your orthodontist taking dental impressions, X-rays and photographs which are sent off to Align Technology – who then creates simulated images of your teeth being repositioned during the Invisalign stages.  Upon you consenting to the treatment, a plastic resign aligner is manufactured for each stage of the computer simulation and sent to your orthodontist.

Your aligners are custom moulded to allow your teeth to gradually shift into a straighter position – changing sets approximately every two weeks until your perfect smile is achieved.  Not only are they discreet and comfortable, the aligners also give less force and aches if you were to wear metal braces for the whole straightening process.

It’s written in the stars

What’s the secret behind the smiles of celebrities such as Grey’s Anatomy actress Katherine Heigl and supermodel Gisele Bundchen?  Of course – Invisalign!  Even Tom Cruise and Oprah Winfrey were rumoured to be wearing them (though it was hard to tell, that’s how deceptive Invisalign really is!).

Easy on your time and bank balance, becoming an Invisalign patient means less visits to the orthodontists than if you were wearing metal braces, and at an affordable price that is worth both your smile and self-esteem.

We understand the importance of a smile, and how much of a confidence boost it is to show off your pearly whites – and it doesn’t matter how young or old you are, it’s never too late to have something to smile about.
